Santos Hernandez was born in Madrid, Spain in 1874. He learned the art of building the guitar while apprenticing around other guitar shops in Spain. In 1983 he was drafted in the military where he spent five years. In 1905 he joined the legendary shop of Manuel Ramirez, replacing Enrique Garcia where he stayed until he opened his own shop in 1920. After his death in 1943, another luthier of note Marcelo Barbero took of duties in his shop. Hernandez was responsible for some of the most beautiful sounding instruments the world has ever known.
