A discussion between Richard Hoover, of Santa Cruz Guitar Company, and John of Trilogy about the gap between steel string and classical guitars both feel-wise and sound-wise, led Richard to design and build what he felt would be a wonderful bridge between the two. The result was the small bodied Style 1. We received our first in 2004 and were immediately taken with the comfortable size that seemed not to sacrifice any volume or power. The small design brought focus to the bass, which gave the instrument a balance more similar to a classical guitar and make the ideal for recording. The Style 1's made for us here at Trilogy are built as cedar tops with the availability of walnut or Brazilian rosewood for the back and sides and feature a pyramid bridge and engraved Waverly tuning machines with ivoroid knobs.
This Brazilian rosewood Style 1 (#196) has a slightly shallower box than it's walnut counterpart, giving it a highly focused and brilliant sound. The cedar top is accented simply and beautiful with a cobalt blue rosette and purfling. The top was tuned personally by Richard Hoover.
